Holy Jim Cummings news and interviews, Batman! (Winnie the Pooh media tour Mega-Post)

So, um, as you may have noticed… There have been more interviews and articles about Jim Cummings in the last week then in the entire last year. And I, your mild manner cult leader, am having some trouble keeping up while still maintaining the rest of my life.

I have decided to handle this thusly: a mega post. Here is a big ole list of some of the news and interviews and other goodies that have come up since I last updated you…

Firstly, here are a few that I shared on Facebook on Twitter on Friday but never got a chance to add to the blog.

I shared this on the social networks already as well but I wanted to highlight this on it’s own little row because it’s a big fat hairy deal: Jim Cummings was on The Late Late Show with Craig “the new voice of Owl” Ferguson this past Friday. If you missed it, you can catch the full episode here. (Jim is near the end). There’s an unofficial video that’s just the clip of Jim Cummings here but I don’t know how long it will be up before it gets taken down. To quote @shallow15, “Did you see Jim Cummings on Craig Ferguson last night? He killed! And earned the Golden Mouth Organ.”

Now for the stuff that I didn’t share on Friday…

But how is the movie, you ask?

  • It’s got an overwhelmingly positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes
  • The California Literary Review says, “Jim Cummings, however, takes the prize for his leading role. The task of preserving Pooh’s one of a kind tone and manner of speech, made famous by the late Sterling Holloway, is a staggering one, and Cummings (who also plays the spirited Tigger) does it so well that Winnie the Pooh is the only character who sounds just as he did almost fifty years ago. ”
  • RT @ToddEdwardsFilm Winnie the Pooh is excellent. A rare throwback to classic Disney, with a surprisingly sharp script. Congrats to Jim Cummings & all involved.

Whew! Have I missed any? Leave em below.

Video Jim Cummings interview with LoopLane

The bit with Jim Cummings is in the beginning. It’s short but cute and contains Tom Kenny which is always a plus.

“So, no offense to Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, Craig Ferguson, Travis Oates and Bud Luckey, but no one really knows who you are.” -Reel to Reel

And seriously? You haven’t at least heard of Craig Ferguson?

How Jim Cummings describes Winnie the Pooh and Tigger

Pooh (voice of Jim Cummings): Actor Jim Cummings sees Winnie the Pooh as “a cross between the happiest gentleman and the sweetest child. I think Pooh sees the world through honey-coloured glasses.”

(If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you saw that description coming. Oh, and… drink!)

Tigger (Jim Cummings). He’s the exuberant creature who gets himself into trouble by acting on impulse. “If you’re gonna bounce, you got to have some bounce,” he says.

Harry Connick Jr. as Ray the Firefly instead of Jim Cummings in ‘The Princess and the Frog’? It almost happened

    From Nola:

Voice actor and former New Orleans resident Jim Cummings lists Winnie the Pooh and Tigger as two of his favorites among the countless characters he’s brought to life, but right up there with them is Ray the Firefly from Disney’s New Orleans-set “The Princess and the Frog” — a role that he said almost went to another voice that should be familiar to local ears.

“It’s funny because they tend to use a lot of celebrities and this and that, and I went out to do the audition originally for ‘Princess and the Frog’ and my agent said, ‘Well, the casting people really love you, but they’re not going to give you a callback. They’re going to wait until the very end of the audition process until it’s down to you and somebody else,’” Cummings said, calling recently to chat about Disney’s new “Winnie the Pooh,” opening Friday (July 15). “I went, ‘Oh, God, that’s fine. I guess I’ll be running into Harry Connick Jr. pretty soon.’

“And sure enough, like six months later, she comes up and says, ‘Remember what you said?’ I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. Me and Harry Connick Jr.?’ She goes, ‘Yep.’

“But I rolled those dice. I brought my washboard, you know, and I brought my thimbles and I brought it all to the (final audition),” he said before lapsing into his Ray the Firefly voice: “We passed a good time, with that zydeco, yeah.”

“And,” he said, “I ended up getting the job.”

This is one of my favorites so far out of this press tour. It starts out with the video above and then becomes a text interview. You can read the rest of that here.

I love the part when he’s all mad at Mickey for stealing Pete’s boat in Steamboat Willie. :-)
